Term Papers Versus Research PapersThere is a wide divergence between the length of different types of research papers, and term papers are longer and include statistical procedures, unlike research papers. But why is this so?Why is it that so many students get in trouble for thinking too much in English when taking their English literature classes? Of course, a lot of people actually do think too much in English, and as a matter of fact, they don't study the literature very well. This results in them applying too many adjectives to ideas and too many adverbs to figures.For example, research papers are longer than term papers because research papers contain extensive data. Term papers on the other hand, only contain theses and not comprehensive facts.Why is it that we should be able to equate the two? Isn't it clear to anyone that the two types of paper are of different things?Statisticians are very knowledgeable about statistics and more importantly, they know that the two types of p aper are quite different, so they avoid the type of words that students write in term papers: 'may,' 'could,' 'we might,' and even 'probably.' They are afraid that students will misuse words that they normally avoid.The term research papers contain extensive data and we are pretty sure that the students in their class probably think that their student paper actually does not contain any data. We also know that students probably write their research papers using adjective-noun pairings. These pairs usually create a negative connotation in their minds because when they think about it, they find that one noun is already a negative, like example.Term papers on the other hand contain a singular number of nouns and verbs, but these pronouns do not get paired with each other in research papers. In fact, the student paper would just sound like a language class if the researchers in the class were writing about their own research paper. We don't think that they have to worry that their stude nts would become confused by the different number of words in their research papers.Academic writers must learn to use proper vocabulary and will be surprised at how many of the nouns in their research papers are already considered as negative in our minds. Therefore, in order to protect their writing and their research papers, it is important for the academicians to keep in mind that the term paper may just end up becoming the research paper.
